(too old to reply)

Various things all over the map, most of them not necessarily very visi=
ble
to most people. ALSA update, and tons of small fixes pretty much
everywhere.

The one thing that people may actually _notice_ is that you get a lot m=
ore
warnings for some drivers due to the stricter type-checks for PCI memor=
y
mapping. They are harmless (code generation should be the same), and we=
'll
work on trying to fix up the drivers as we go along, but they can be a =
bit
daunting if you happen to enable some of the less type-friendly drivers=

right now..

I got an oops with 2.6.9-rc2 in free_blocks.
If I find a reliable way to reproduce, I will let you know.
2.6.8.1 was running stable for some weeks on the same machine.

Of the functions within the call trace cache_reap seems to have the most
invasive changes between 2.6.8.1 and 2.6.9-rc2, but I dont know if there is
the problem.

config is attached

cheers

Christian

I got an oops with 2.6.9-rc2 in free_block.
The disassembly is:

mov 0xc04fef10,%edx edx is "mem_map"
lea 0x40000000(%ecx),%eax ecx is virtual address of "obj"
shr $0xc,%eax eax is now pfn
shl $0x5,%eax pfn * sizeof(struct page)
mov 0x1c(%edx,%eax,1),%ebx page->lru.prev
**** mov 0x4(%ebx),%edx *****
mov (%ebx),%eax
mov %edx,0x4(%eax)
mov %eax,(%edx)

and your "%ebx" value is obviously crap. In fact, it looks like your %ecx
is crap to begin with.

Looks like this code (mm/slab.c: 2131):

slabp = GET_PAGE_SLAB(virt_to_page(objp));
list_del(&slabp->list);

and in particular, you have "slabp" in %ebx, and the thing that oopses is
trying to load "entry->prev" in list_del().

Looking at the register state:

eax: 0080cc00 ebx: 013bab03 ecx: 00660044 edx: c1000000
esi: c178f7e0 edi: 00000000 ebp: eff09f04 esp: eff09ee8

That "ecx" value looks strange. It should be a kernel virtual address, and
it isn't.

Looks like somebody is trying to free an invalid address. Sadly, your
traceback doesn't show _who_, because it's hidden in the buffering.

The only changes to slab itself have been by Christoph lately, I don't
think that matters. Can you enable slab debugging? That should catch it
much earlier..

yes, I doubt if we get synchronous notification of a double-free without
CONFIG_DEBUG_SLAB.

There's a known double-free in the isofs filesystem. Christian, were you
using CDROMs at the time?

Yup. Enable CONFIG_DEBUG_SLAB.

Invalidate this pointer so it doesn't get freed twice.

Got it. I can reproduce the problem by mounting one of my recently burned
backup cds.

reversing "[PATCH] Fix leaks in ISOFS."

helps. Seems we need a fix for the fix.

thanks for your help

reversing "[PATCH] Fix leaks in ISOFS."
http://linux.bkbits.net:8080/linux-2.6/cset%40413792bdlE_TiqzIHELio3xcG68QeQ
helps. Seems we need a fix for the fix.
Andrew posted one already, which looks "obviously correct". Can you undo
your revert, and try that one? I've already applied it to BK, so if you're
on BK you can just pull from the current repo's.

Thanks,

Linus

That certainly is incomplete, at least the insmod messages should be
there if mencoder triggeres the crash. A serial console log would be
helpful. You can also try to reverse only parts of the patch, only the
changes in bttv-driver.c and/or in bttv-risc.c and see what happens.

Which format+size you are capturing with mencoder?

o v4l: bttv driver update
This patch,
makes my computer lock up or instantly reboot when I try to do a tv
recording with mplayer.
I think the patch below should be applied before 2.6.9. It fixes the
bug that made the card DMA lots of data to random memory locations,
causing lockups and instant reboots.

The problem was that the yoffset variable got modified inside the
loop, but the logic in the switch statement was meant to work on the
initial value of the yoffset variable.

(Bug fix extracted from
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=109532814823565&w=2)

You forgot to add `struct rusage _rusage' members to struct siginfo._sigchld
for 2 architectures that define HAVE_ARCH_SIGINFO_T.

I needed the first patch below to fix compilation for m68k.
I guess Ralf needs the second one for MIPS.

No, that patch makes no difference, because == has higher precedence
than = in C. (I also verified that this patch doesn't change the
generated object code, so compiler bugs aren't an issue either.)

Various things all over the map, most of them not necessarily very visible
to most people. ALSA update, and tons of small fixes pretty much
everywhere.
The one thing that people may actually _notice_ is that you get a lot more
warnings for some drivers due to the stricter type-checks for PCI memory
mapping. They are harmless (code generation should be the same), and we'll
work on trying to fix up the drivers as we go along, but they can be a bit
daunting if you happen to enable some of the less type-friendly drivers
right now..

when I'm talking to journalists I just say "programmer" or something like that.
